Thermal Energy Storage for Cost-Effective Energy Management & CO2 Mitigation

  • Annex 30
  • Completed
  • Energy storage in energy systems

About

The main objective of Annex 30 is to encourage the implementation of thermal energy storage (TES) systems and evaluate their potential with respect to CO2 mitigation and cost-effective thermal energy management.

These overarching targets can be supported by the integration of thermal energy storage systems in order to

  • improve overall energy efficiency of the processes
  • increase process flexibility
  • increase utilization of renewable energy technologies (including solar thermal technologies as well as fluctuating power generation by PV and wind) and
  • boost energy system flexibility through peak shaving and demand response applications

The participants of Annex 30 have created a methodology that systematically analyses an integrated TES system by characterizing the process and TES system in isolation, then evaluating them together in an application. Specifically, the methodology proposes a set of process analysis guidelines, defines the different analysis levels of a TES system (i.e. system boundary) and provides definitions for important technical parameters of a TES system. For the overall application, the methodology identifies a set of key performance indicators (KPI) from the perspectives of different stakeholders.

This comprehensive approach has focused on four sectors: industrial processes, power plant applications, non-residential buildings and district heating and cooling. The methodology has been applied to various case studies originating from demonstration projects where TES systems are applied in a real environment. Industrial involvement is critical to this annex and the crucial goal of harmonizing research and industrial needs will be endeavored.
